Rare Earth Fluoride

Rare earth fluorides are compounds composed of rare earth elements and fluorine atoms, usually white crystals with good thermal and chemical stability. Fluorinated rare earths have a very important position in the rare earth industry, and their main applications include electronics, catalysis, ceramics, energy and other fields.

Fluoride refers to organic or inorganic compounds containing negative fluorine. Like other halogens, fluorine forms a single negative anion (f −). Fluorine can form binary compounds with all elements except He, Ne and Ar. Rare earth fluoride refers to the compound composed of fluorine and rare earth metal elements. The common rare earth fluoride are LaF3, CeF3, PrF3, NdF3, GdF3, DyF3, YF3, etc. It can be used in biochemical research, yttrium salt, fireworks, precipitant, infrared low refractive index materials, laser crystal materials, up conversion luminescence materials and so on.

Rare Earth Fluoride Applications

YF3: 

Yttrium fluoride can be used in biochemical research, yttrium salt, fireworks, precipitant, infrared low refractive index materials, laser crystal materials, upconversion luminescence materials, and so on.

LaF3:

1. The preparation of modern medical image display technology and the requirements of the nuclear science scintillator.
2. Rare earth crystal laser materials.
3. Fluoride glass fiber optic and rare earth infrared glass. Used in the manufacturing of arc light carbon electrodes in the lighting source.
4. The analysis of chemicals used in the manufacturing of fluoride ion-selective electrode.
5. Used in the metallurgical industry to manufacturing the special alloy and electrolytic producing lanthanum metal.

CeF3:

Cerium fluoride can be used in arc carbon rod, metal cerium, nonferrous alloy, infrared low refractive index material, laser crystal material, laboratory reagent, optical fiber doping, laser material, optical fiber coating material, electronic material, etc.

PrF3:

1. Making praseodymium metal
2. Rare earth permanent magnet alloy
3. Color glasses and enamels

NdF3:

1. Scintillator for preparing the detector.
2. It is used in rare earth crystal laser material and rare earth fluoride glass optical fiber.
3. In the metallurgical industry, it is used as an additive of aviation magnesium alloy and metal electrolytic production.
4. It is used for manufacturing carbon electrode of the arc lamp in the lighting source.
5. It is used to prepare metal neodymium and neodymium iron boron alloy.

SmF3:

1. Laboratory reagents

EuF3: 

Europium fluoride can be used as a fluorescent material, ion activation source, and thermal spraying display material.

GdF3:

TbF3:

1. Preparation of fluoride glasses
2. Preparation of electroluminescent thin films and luminescent zinc sulfide
3. Green phosphors in color TV tubes

DyF3:

Dysprosium fluoride can be used in infrared low refractive index materials, crystal materials and so on.
ErF3: Erbium Fluoride is widely used in optical coating, optical fiber doping, laser crystal, crystal materials, and laser amplifier.

3. Catalysts in petroleum cracking in refineries.
4. Used in alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization applications.
5. Oxygen-sensitive applications, such as metal production.

Electronics: Rare earth fluorides have a wide range of applications in electronics, as materials in electronic components, such as magnetic storage, displays, and fiber-optic amplifiers, semiconductors, microelectronics, infrared and optoelectronics.


Catalysis: Rare earth fluorides can be used as catalysts with higher activity than many conventional catalysts, and have an important role in certain fine chemical reactions. In the field of catalysis, fluorinated rare earths are widely used in catalytic synthesis of polymer substances, liquid phase hydrogenation reaction, alkylation reaction, esterification reaction and other important reactions.


Ceramics: Rare earth fluorides are also widely used in the ceramic field, which can improve the properties of ceramic materials, such as increasing the conductivity, thermal stability and hardness of the materials. At the same time, fluorinated rare earths can be used as an additive for sintered powder ceramics, which can improve the density and preparation efficiency of ceramic materials.
